Design details

Introduction

We proudly present a new era in Qln history. The Qln Sonora: with its fullrange driver, and an add-on tweeter that plays perfect with low-powered amplifier from 5W and above. Sonora is a classically designed high sensitivity speaker with the latest drive units technology. With a focus on being easy to drive, low distortion and non resonant technology. The goal is to make an uncomplicated sound that is easy to listen to and that responds well to the smallest input signal. The core of Qln philosophy is still here. Time alignment drivers and a silent, non resonant cabinet that won’t add coloration to your music.

Cabinet

The cabinet is tuned to make a natural roll-off without any ringing in step response. Cabinets are made of 19mm thick HDF-board with internal damping pads in order to minimize cabinet material resonances. Natural wool is used for internal acoustic damping and produces a wider frequency damping of the internal sound. It is loose packed so sound is not stored in the damping material. Minimum damping material is used, applied in the center and middle of the cabinet where air speed is at it maximum.

Crossover

The 1.5 way crossover, with its minimum number of components, is hardwired with high-end Mundorf capacitors and baked air coils to avoid any internal component and filter resonances. The result is perfect timing within the crossover and throughout the entire frequency range.

Drivers

The 8” fullrange and treble drivers have been specifically selected and custom developed by industry renowned driver manufacturers and offer the latest in 21st century advanced driver technology. The unique light weight 8” fullregister driver with its built-in copper rings in the magnet system offers symmetric drive suppressing intermodulation distortion. Low losses and a large window in the chassis reduce reflection air noise, resulting in industry leading high-end voice handling and astonishing micro/macro dynamics in its whole frequency range. Likewise, the 30mm wide surround waveguide tweeter offers time alignment, superb vocal rendition, and excellent imaging at all listening positions. The large roll surround, built-in copper ring and textile dome diaphragm provides a flat frequency response above 30 KHz. A large rear acoustic chamber give low compression and moves the tweeter system resonance far from crossover point.

Cables and speaker connectors

Internal cabling is our own, specially designed for use as internal speaker cables . All components are carefully hand selected and individually tested for any deviances. WBT pure copper NexgenTM pole screws are used with grip-friendly screws.

“The goal with this model was to create an uncomplicated sounding speaker that is easy to listen and that responds well to the smallest input signal. To this end, the main drive unit has an extremely light cone with a high sensitivity. Since low-mass cones do not tend to go very deep in a small cabinet the manufacturer chose not to force-produce bass from an undersized enclosure using tricks but to simply use a well-specified and large cabinet. As I would hear immediately after connecting them, the Sonora’s bass is remarkably deep but indeed very natural and uncompressed. The speaker’s specified low-frequency performance of -3dB 35Hz clearly shows.”
